Graduate Profile

Helen Corriea
B.A. Hons. , M.App.Psych, PhD

I started my psychology degree in 1993, though I had intended to apply for entry into the law program at the end of the first year. However, by the end of the year I had developed such a passionate interest in the area that I decided to continue. I enjoyed psychology at Murdoch so much that, in 1995, my friends and I began the Murdoch Psychology Association. It was designed not only to provide social opportunities, but also to provide academic support. It was here that I gained an appreciation for the importance of information as a resource.

I completed my Honours year with Dr Pia Broderick in 1996, who was extraordinarily patient with me as I struggled with the stresses of my thesis. In 1997, I took a year off from study, and I began tutoring for Pia in the first year Developmental Psychology unit. I found tutoring quite rewarding and, balanced with my interest in research, it fueled my desire to steer into academia at some point in the future. However, I also wanted to work in in a clinical capacity, and so I started my Masters degree in 1998, with the view to transfer to the PhD program and complete both degrees. Though it took some time, my PhD was recently completed (Aug 2003), under the excellent guidance of Dr Pia Broderick and Associate Professor Iain Walker. I have also just completed my Master of Applied Psychology-Clinical (November, 2003).

I continued tutoring for most of my postgraduate degree, with an increasing appreciation for information as a resource and a new interest in the Internet as a method of information delivery. I gained important knowledge and skills in the use of the web as an educational resource by managing and creating resources for WebCT in Pia's first year Devolopmental Psychology unit. My interest in this area has led me to work in the Department of Health for a group called the Centre for Clinical Interventions, creating information resources that are delivered via the world wide web. This has included assisting in the development and maintenance of the CCI web site (http://www.cci.health.wa.gov.au) and web site resources. I'm looking forward to conducting some research in this area and starting clinical work in the new year.
