Graduate Profile

Ritu Campbell (nee Shrivastava)
B. A. Hons., D. Psych. (Clinical)
Position: Clinical Psychologist, Private Practice
Value of the Program:
I began the undergraduate program in 1992 and continued right through until I
completed the D. Psych. degree in 2001.
The undergraduate program helped me to develop a solid foundation of skills
in psychological research and professional writing and presentation. It offered
the opportunity to sample the wide range of topics within the very broad field
of psychology. I was also introduced to the highly skilled and supportive teaching
staff that would see me through the tough times and the good times.
I found the clinical postgraduate program flexible to my changing needs in
terms of initially being a part-time student, and then full-time. The coursework
and the internal clinic placement allowed me to develop the skills and confidence
to face my first clients on external placement out in the field. I completed
placements in the areas of school psychology, adult mental health, child and
adolescent mental health, and developmental disabilities, and learned so much
from all of these settings. My disabilities placement first introduced me to
working with children with Autism, and this experience led to my employment
with Disabilities Services Commission and subsequently a move into private practice.
While studying, I was also given the opportunity to tutor undergraduate classes,
which not only provided some income, but also increased my confidence in professional
speaking. Any clinical psychology job requires a very wide range of skills,
and the Murdoch clinical program catered very well for this.
