HONOURS FOR DR GODFREY BARRETT-LENNARD

Dr Godfrey Barrett-Lennard (Goff, to everyone) was recently elected to Fellowship of the Australian Psychological Society, in recognition of his lifetime achievements in psychology. This prestigious award is the latest in a string of awards recognizing Goff’s contributions, including being awarded Life Membership of the APS and the Distinguished Senior Contributor Award of the Division of Counselling Psychology of the American Psychological Association.

Goff has been an Honourary Research Fellow in the School of Psychology for a number of years, and runs an independent private practice. He regularly contributes lectures and supervision to students in the clinical psychology and in the counselling courses offered by the School. His original degrees were in Physics and Maths (1947) and Psychology (1950) from UWA. He subsequently studied with the famous psychologist and counsellor Carl Rogers at the University of Chicago, from which he earned his PhD in 1959. He has held academic positions in the US, Canada, and Australia. He has recently published several books, including Carl Rogers’ helping system: Journey and system (1998), Steps on a mindful journey: Person-centred expressions (2003), and Relationship at the centre: Healing in a troubled world (2005), as well as a number of journal articles and book chapters.

The School of Psychology recently established new postgraduate courses in counselling, and opened a Counselling Clinic in Cottesloe. In recognition of Goff’s contributions to the School of Psychology, the new Clinic, named Caladenia House, is the home of The Godfrey Barrett-Lennard Counsellor Training Centre.
