In July 2005 Dr. Laurence Hartley and Ms. Melanie Freeman were given a grant from PATREC (Planning and Transport Research Centre), a research centre partnered by 4 universities in Perth to support research in the transport industry. Izumi Hart, Graduate Research Assistant was hired to conduct a preliminary investigation into the safety culture of the rail industry in Australia. The longer term aim of the project is to gain industry support and turn this into a PhD.

Izumi participated in PATREC's 1st annual Research Forum at Curtin's Graduate School of Business on 3 October 2005, where she presented her paper Preliminary investigation of benchmarking the safety culture of the Australian rail industry”. She became the proud Winner of the Inaugural C.Y. O'Connor Prize for 2005, awarded for the best presentation, honouring an important figure in the history of Australian transport infrastructure development, Charles Yelverton O’Connor (1843-1902).

An impressive feat at a multi-disciplinary research forum.

We are very pleased with how the project is going and Izumi's dedication and representation of the School and Murdoch.
