Congratulations to Corinne Reid and colleagues for securing a grant from the ARC for $480,000 for the project titled "Maturation of the brain and the development of cognitive abilities"
Corinne, along with Prof Dorothy Bishop (Oxford University), A/Prof Mike Anderson (UWA) and Dr Alison Fox (UWA), will use innovative techniques to measure the development of children's brains. The main aim is to assess the role cortical maturation plays in the development of children's intellectual abilities. They will measure cortical maturation in the frontal regions believed to underpin children's planning abilities, and the areas of the brain thought to underlie the development of language. This will be done by measuring the electrical response of the brain to auditory and visual stimuli. They will determine whether brain areas mature at the same or different rates and what influence that has on intellectual development. The results will be important for both theories of cognitive development and our understanding of developmental disorders
